Kayak Fishing!

SATURDAY, The day after the 5 hour ride on the Cervelo I had the group ride. The group ride is always fun! I rode for about an hour before the group ride because I had to do 4 hours total and then go to work. The group ride usually takes about 2 hours, so I was planning on riding another hour afterwards. We started easy as usual until we reached the airport and then it was time to do work. I decided to dictate the pace and whoever wanted to follow was more than welcome. I could hear cranks turning behind me, but kept on pedaling. On the last downhill, before the Veterans Cemetary Kris Kaiser took a pull in the front. This was a much needed break for me! It gave me the vital 30 seconds to recover and then I pushed up the last hill. Kris attacked and I cranked up the gears, stood up and started to move. I slowly pulled away and finished the first stage strong. On the way to the scenic point it was deja vu. The same thing happened again with the same outcome. The way back to town from the scenic point got more interesting. Basically, I pushed everyone in a tough zone all the way back into town through sun, wind and rain. Everyone was probably hating me, but it was well worth the intense workout. I'm sure everyone was hurting just as bad as I was. It wasn't easy by anymeans! Rode for about another hour after the group ride and then it was off to work.

SUNDAY, was a tough day! Had a 3 hour ride then a 1:30 hour run. I decided to go South for some scenary. This is a tougher route with hills, but its exciting! I love cruising down Kealakekua Road at full speed. A couple of the turns get a little hairy when your doing 40+, but's Its a rush like no other! Roundtrip from my house this usually takes just under 2:30 hours, so I rode Alii Drive and then towards Queen K. and then back home for 3 hours. Transitioned to the run and set off at just above 7:00 minute mile pace. DAMN! I really have a problem with going out to fast. Trying to work on this so I dont kill myself during Ironman. Towards the later stages of my runs I tend to lose focus, yet another thing I'm trying to work on. Finished the run and went home satisfied!

MONDAY, a FULL DAY OFF! NOTHING! NADA! KAPUT! CHEEHOOO! I worked in the morning and had the afternoon off. Went spot lighting in some ponds at night and caught some fish and a white eel for my aquarium. SWEET!

TUESDAY, Finally, to the Kayak Fishing! Work was slow today so I went Kayak Fishing with a buddy. It was so much fun! We palud' or (Chummed) the water all around us to start a feeding frenzy. We caught some snappers or (Onaga). After, about 3 hours we had enough and headed in. I caught the biggest one around 3Ibs. Can't wait for dinner tonight! When you order these at the restaurant they cost around $30 a plate. SCORED!

Afeter the kayak fishing, I had yet another bike to run brick. This is awesome keep um coming. Went smooth and it was easy and not to long. TIME TO COOK THE FISH!

ALOHAAAA!!!!

5 hour ride on the Cervelo!!!

Yesterday, I had a 5 hour ride. No ordianary ride. I got to ride the Cervelo P3, which is what I'll use for Ironman. The last time I rode this bike was the Hawaii 70.3. This bike weighs 5 Ibs less than my Specialized and is more aerodynamic. It's simply INCREDIBLE. When I ride this bike I feel lightning fast!

I went through many climate changes while riding. Starting with the Hot, Sunny, Voggy, Kona afternoon, transitioned into windy Waikoloa, then got a little drizzle after Kawaihae. Closer to Hawi the Sun popped out the Vog disappeared and it got really humid. I rode through every kind of wind, Head, Tail and Crosswind. It was great riding in so many different conditions!

My nutrition went well, so no bonking! I was told to bike easy and push the hills after Kawaihae. I attacked every hill in the standing position. This was tough with the hefty crosswind because the bike is so light that it felt like it was going to blow me over. I hit my halfway mark about 3-4 miles before Hawi and turned around. The way home went just as good as the way there.

I went over 105 miles in the 5 hours! Felt great, nutrition was on point, the bike is AWESOME! Got home just before sunset, so I didn't have to ride in the dark.

This morning we had masters swim, which is also going great! My swimming is coming along as planned. My 100's are usually around 1:15 without doing a flip-turn. Jen Nottage said she's going to teach me a flip-turn, which is GREAT! Hopefully after I learn a flip-turn I'll be swimming sub 1:00's. Time to head out for a treadmill workout. CHEEHOO!

Have a GREAT WEEKEND!

P.S. Bree I'll be sending you fast telepathic messages all weekend, so keep channel 808 open! HAHA!

Cody to the RESCUE!!!

We (Oklahoma Wedding party) were heading back into town from the Hilton. I was playing tour guide and showing them some things to do on the last day before they departed that night. Instead of sitting in the Kona crawl traffic just past Costco, I told them to turn up Kaiminani for a shortcut.

We get to the top and what do you know traffic. The first thought in my head was "oh no there must be an accident". We get a little closer and I see this lady standing on the stepboard of a truck hanging on to the door. I see her jump off and start chasing a little speedy white dog darting down the road. They had the hazard lights on and the lady was waving at cars coming in the opposite direction to get them to slow down. This dog almost got hit about five times within five minutes. The truck the lady was in got close to the dog so she jumped off and tried catching it, but it juked her out like a football player and went straight into oncoming traffic and almost got flattened.

After seeing this I told the Wedding party to "let me out and I'll chase this dog down". We got within five cars of the dog and I bailed out like a chinese firedrill. The chase began! The dog had a good 50 yard jump on me. A guy on a motorcylcle pulled over in front of the dog and jumped off his bike and yelled at the dog and tried grabbing it, but again the dog juked him out and headed for oncoming traffic. This slowed it down a little and I was within 20 yards of it. Then, it got a second wind and started to gain on me. I must have been running about 6:00 minute mile pace at this point and decided to switch gears or I wasn't gonna catch this little bugga! I switched into track mode and was flying down the highway at what felt like 5:00 minute mile pace. I got alongside the dog and bolted past it to get in front of it. When I got far enough in front of it, I bent over with my hands out and said in a real light voice "come here puppy". The dog just lied down on its stomach on all fours and just surrendered to me! IT WAS GREAT! I picked up the little, fluffy, white poodle looking mut and carried it off the road. Their was a train of cars following me down the road clapping and yelling after I caught the dog. All four paws were bleeding and it was panting like crazy. About 20 or 30 cars passed and the truck with the lady pulled over and she took the dog and thanked me. She said that they were house sitting and the dog escaped and were chasing it for miles. It took me at least a mile to chase it down. At one point I wasn't sure if I could catch it, but I figured it would get tired before me. I was so thankful when it just lied down and gave up.

The "Oklahoma wedding party", said "that moment just topped off the amazing trip". I put the Ironman training to good use by SAVING A DOG NAMED "KEA"!

A WEEK IN REVIEW....

It's been a week since my last post. Time for a little catch-up. Since the "Sea to Stars" race I've been busy training and entertaining family here for a wedding. Things have been pretty hectic lately. Work has been slow, which is good and bad. Good because it leaves time for training and bad because I'm not making any money. We had some family members fly in early in the week for a wedding. I've been showing them around, diving, good sights around the islands, beaches, etc.. This all meant training at 4:00am using the old Hawaiian navigation of Stars. Having blinking lights on my bike so cars can see me, not being able to see rocks or anything on the road for that matter. The plus side of riding really early is its nice and cool out. Training is getting longer with 5 and 6 hour days, which is usually a long ride and run. One of the days was a 4 hour ride and 1 hour run. I started at 4:00am and meet up with Bree around 6:00am for her 2 hour ride. She had repeats of 10 x 4 minutes at zone 4. This was no problem and I was feeling great, especially after eating my secret weapon the "POP TART". I noticed Bree didn't put something funny that happened in her blog after we turned around at the scenic, so I'll do the honors and spill the beans. HAHA! BREE! We were turning around crossing the highway and she says "I'm dangerous watch out", and we pull into the scenic to turn around. I hear a racket behind me and turn around and see Bree laying on the ground. She fell over like she saw Toby Maguire or something. HAHA! Luckily she was fine and only 2 people saw it, myslef and the guy driving the big green #18 repair truck. YOUR HILARIOUS BREE!!! I had to tell the story....
The wedding was great, we had very beautiful weather and a great sunset. The wedding was held at Kukio beach, which was amazing. I'll miss my Oklahoma friends that were here and can't wait to see them again. Their such great people, I love having them as a part of my life. It was a Great week and I'm looking forward to some intense training this week.

Sea to Stars and Time Trial Results

HOLY MOLY WITH THE GAUCAMOLE!

The Sea to Stars race is CRAZY! I ended up in 7th place overall and 2nd in the Elite 4/5 Category with a time of 3:12:09. From the very get go of the race it was intense. I held with the lead guys for about the first 6-10 miles or so. The guy who won the race 2 years ago and holds the course record tried to make a break for it. At this point I was sitting in 8th place and the guy in front of me motioned for me to follow him to reel him back. We reeled him back and the guy I went with stayed in the front for about a minute or so then peeled back. This left me in the front pulling everybody going up hill. I must have pulled everyone for a good 4-5 minutes. I looked back a few times looking for someone else to move up, but they were comfortable where they were, so I just kept pushing on. Since no one would come to the front I decided to peel off to the right and let everyone pass me. Once they passed me I tried jumping back on the wheel of the last guy. They were moving a lot faster than I thought and was struggling to get back on. For about 2 miles I tried frantically to catch back on but wasn't able to do it. It was like trying to catch a train, but got left in the dust! For the rest of the race I was all alone. THIS RACE FELT LIKE TORTURE. NON STOP CLIMBING FOR 34 miles, starting at sea level and ending at about 9200ft. Great training day that goes in the IRONMAN BANK!

The Time Trial was more my style. 10.5 miles of all out! I finished 3rd overall with a time of 23:30, just 29 seconds behind 1st. This averages to 26.80 MPH. The legs and lower back were a little sore from climbing a mountain yesterday, but gritted it out and prevailed! Time to go to work now. ALOHA and have a great SUNDAY!

My first blog posting!

Aloha!!!

Welcome to my blog! I hope you like reading about Swimming, Biking, Running and everything else that goes on in my chaotic young life. My grammar isn't perfect and I do have run on sentences, but who really cares anyway. HAHA! Thats the Hawaii public school system for you!

I'll start off by talking about swimming, considering I just got done with Steve Borowski's Masters swim course. Swimming doesn't get any easier that's for sure! It just get's a little more technical and a little faster with each practice. Just when I thought my form was on point, coach Steve pointed out something I was doing wrong. IT'S GREAT! With this little difference in my swim stroke it created soreness in muscles that weren't sore before.

This brings back a flashback of when I first started last year in the "GUPPY" lane. I knew nothing about swimming. Steve told me swim a length and lets see what you got. I remember taking 2 or 3 breathes and swimming like a madman. There was a big smile on his face and he said "we got a lot of work to do". LOL!!! I've come such a long way! HAHA! Now, I'm in lane 2 working my way up to lane 1 with the fast fishy's! I'm very fortunate and thankful to have such a great swim coach!

Tomorrow, is the "Sea to Stars" cycling race. Climbing Mauna Kea! For those of you that don't know it's actually the tallest mountain on Earth if you measure it from the sea floor. From sea level its almost 14,000ft. The race is 34 miles ending at 9200ft elevation. A few of hawaii's top cyclists will be competing and I'll be the first to tell you, I'm not going down without a fight! For those that know me, I can be pretty intense while cycling, staying in the front of the pack in any conditions. Charging up hills like its flat, bombing down descents like a bat out of hell. This race won't be easy and I'm surely not making it easy for the outer Island guys coming to my Island!

STAY TUNED FOR THE RESULTS
